Assignment # 9

Copyright laws have been in effect for a long time and I think we need to consider how effective they are and whether or not they are useful with technology developing the way it is. I think the copyright policy is outdated and needs to be changed. With copyright laws in effect the way they are then most of the United States younger generation should be sued or arrested for “music sharing”. Practically everyone I know has used or will use a program to share music online with friends or with strangers, and I think this is impossible to prevent. So copyright law is constantly being broken, and really there’s not much that can be done with the way technology and the internet continue to develop.
Because there are websites that share music without necessarily  downloading a song , such as youtube, everyone has broken a copyright law. So someone needs to develop a way to make music sharing legal while in turn allowing artists to make money.  According to the article I chose against copyright law, copyright holders tried to sue radio stations “out of existence” but eventually stopped trying. Maybe copyright holders should stop trying to sue everyone and start trying to change and enforce a different more sufficient law.
So because copyright laws can easily be broken with todays technology , and not everyone can be sued or arrested then people should consider changing these laws. Making it more convenient for everyone involved in a copyright battle.

Assignment # 5

I think that yahoo and bing return similar results both showing gambling ads and displaying wikipedia as the first result , lii.org seems a little different because it didn’t find anything from wikipedia and it also seems to return a lot of results to help with gambling.  Deep dyve seemed the most scholarly and most of the results were referring to health problems associated with gambling .

Based on the readings we have had and various topics we have discussed  I think that for buying a car and looking for a recipe I would use a search engine, or the “visible web” because a car and a recipe is something very easy to find and it is a common thing that people might search for. For global dimming  and topics in science I would use the “invisible web” or different  databases, because these topics are much more narrow, and might not be as easy to find on the regular web.

Assignment # 4

I use various methods to stay up to date on the latest news , some of these methods are websites, emails and just old fashioned television. My daily routine usually starts with google , I usually select news and start scrolling through the days top headlines. After this I usually visit the CNN and New York Times websites and watch the most popular videos and read some opinion discussions about what interests me. I work at MetLife Insurance Group and my department has the television tuned to CNN all day, so whenever there is breaking news thats the quickest way everyone finds out about it. Sometimes and very rarely I hear news from close friends or coworkers.

Assignment #3

I didn’t use a search tool I thought the easiest way to search for an article about the health care reform would be to go to a trusty news site. In these two cases I went directly to the New York Times Website and the CNN website. Credibility and reliability are the two most  important things when doing an internet research because facts are essential to writing a good essay, or debating accurately . If a website is well known people are more likely to trust it, for example if I said ” I read an article about the Earth being flat in the Dima Daily News” you probably wouldn’t trust me but if I said I read it in the New York Times, you would feel compelled to research it yourself.

Assignment #1

I am doing my full time internship this semester at MetLife , however I am still in school full time. An online course was my best choice when trying to balance a full time work schedule with a full time school schedule. I hope to achieve the required credits from this course and to gain all the resources I can about internet research. I am taking this course mostly because it fulfills a graduation requirement for my Liberal Arts major, however, I was interested in this particular course because internet research can always be beneficial wherever I am.
